DIVERSITY, INCLUSION & ACCESSIBILITY
Our Commitment
Mindful Therapy is committed to providing inclusive, accessible and affirming psychological services to all people, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, language, culture, immigration status, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, physical attributes, ability, disability, cognitive capacity, neurodiversity, socioeconomic status, geographic location, educational attainment, or religious and spiritual orientation.
We recognise that everyone’s experiences are shaped by intersecting forms of diversity, and we are committed to understanding and responding to the unique needs of each person we work with.
LGBTIQA+ Inclusive Practice
Mindful Therapy is a safe, welcoming and inclusive space for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. Cameron is committed to providing non-discriminatory, respectful and culturally responsive psychological services, including:
- Respecting your identity – Using your chosen name and pronouns without question
- Understanding context – Recognizing the unique mental health challenges and systemic barriers that may impact LGBTIQA+ individuals
- Evidence-based practice – Applying psychological interventions supported by research, tailored to your individual needs and goals
- Collaborative goal-setting – Working with you to identify what matters most in your therapy journey
- Appropriate referral – Connecting you with LGBTIQA+-specialist practitioners or community services when this better serves your needs
- Ongoing learning – Maintaining competency through supervision, professional development and reflective practice in working with diverse communities
Cameron recognizes the importance of ongoing professional development in this area and engages in regular supervision and reflective practice to ensure culturally responsive care.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice
Mindful Therapy embraces a neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approach that recognizes neurological differences (including autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental variations) as natural human diversity. Cameron is committed to providing inclusive, respectful psychological services that:
- Respect communication preferences and sensory needs – Adapting to your preferred communication style and making reasonable adjustments for sensory sensitivities
- Make reasonable adjustments – Modifying therapeutic approaches, assessment methods, and appointment structures to accommodate your unique neurological profile
- Apply strengths-based approaches – Focusing on your capabilities, goals and aspirations rather than deficits or normalization
- Use evidence-based, neurodiversity-informed interventions – Selecting and adapting psychological practices supported by research and informed by neurodiversity perspectives
- Support self-advocacy and autonomy – Collaborating with you to identify your goals and respecting your expertise in your own experience
- Understand alternative and augmentative communication – Adapting communication methods as needed to effectively engage with you
- Connect with specialist services – Providing referrals to specialized neurodiversity-focused practitioners or support services when this better serves your needs
Cameron engages in ongoing professional development and supervision to maintain culturally responsive practice in supporting neurodivergent individuals.
Accessibility & Disability Support
Mindful Therapy is committed to making our services accessible to people with disabilities. As a telehealth-only service, we can support clients who may have mobility limitations, chronic illness, or other factors that make face-to-face appointments challenging. We can also:
- Make reasonable adjustments to our therapeutic approach
- Accommodate alternative and augmentative communication methods
- Adjust session timing and frequency to suit your needs
- Support involvement of carers or support persons where appropriate
- Provide written summaries of sessions if helpful
We are experienced in working with NDIS participants and can support NDIS-funded therapy.
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Communities
We welcome people from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. We understand that:
- Mental health and wellbeing are understood differently across cultures
- Migration and settlement experiences can impact mental health
- Trauma histories may include experiences of displacement, persecution or violence
- Language barriers can be navigated with professional interpreters
- Cultural values and beliefs are central to your therapy goals
While Cameron primarily works in English, he can arrange professional interpreters through TIS National (Translating and Interpreting Service) at no cost to you for Medicare-eligible sessions.
Age-Appropriate Practice
Cameron works with adolescents (14+), adults and older adults, adapting his approach to suit different developmental stages and life experiences. We understand the unique mental health needs across the lifespan, from adolescent identity development to challenges of aging, and tailor our therapeutic approach accordingly.
Faith & Spirituality
We respect all religious and spiritual orientations, and recognise that faith and spirituality can be important sources of strength and meaning. Cameron is comfortable integrating your spiritual beliefs into therapy where this is important to you, or maintaining a secular approach if you prefer.
Financial Accessibility
We understand that financial stress can be a barrier to accessing mental health support. Mindful Therapy offers:
- Medicare rebates for eligible clients (reducing out-of-pocket costs to approximately $80)
- Reduced fees by arrangement for clients experiencing severe financial hardship
- Bulk billing where severe financial pressure is present
- NDIS-funded services for eligible participants
- DVA and WorkCover services
Geographic Accessibility
As a telehealth-only service, Mindful Therapy is accessible to clients anywhere in Australia with internet access. This particularly benefits people in rural and remote areas, those with limited local services, and those who prefer the convenience and privacy of accessing therapy from home.
OUR COMMITMENT TO CULTURAL SAFETY
Mindful Therapy is committed to providing culturally safe, respectful and responsive psychological services. Cultural safety is determined by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples themselves and requires ongoing critical reflection on our own knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours.
We acknowledge the historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation, systemic racism and intergenerational trauma on the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We are committed to:
- Providing trauma-aware and culturally informed psychological care
- Respecting and integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural values, beliefs and practices in our therapeutic approach
- Supporting self-determination in healthcare decisions
- Working collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations
- Maintaining ongoing professional development in cultural safety and responsiveness
- Advocating for equity in mental health outcomes
REFERRAL PATHWAYS
We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples may prefer to access culturally specific services. We are happy to provide referrals to Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and Aboriginal mental health services where appropriate.
