‘BEFRIENDING YOUR ANXIETY’
Level 1 Program
Using mindfulness to transform your relationship to worry, fear and rumination.
A 6-week course focusing on building
Real-time emotional management skills
Better self-soothing skills
Anxiety is the most common psychological issue in the world today. In the level 1 ‘Befriending Anxiety’ program we introduce participants to the ‘4 Skills of Mindfulness’. When put together, the 4-Skills represent a comprehensive emotional toolkit for reducing the negative impact of disturbing emotions, particuarly anxiety. As the course unfolds participants will be encouraged to use the 4-Skills to build an array of positive emotions to promote quality of life and peace of mind.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
LEARN THE STRAW BREATH
When it comes to real-time anxiety management, the benefits of ‘lengthening and slowing your breath’ cannot be overstated. Imagining that you are breathing through a straw can be a useful way of slowing down your breathing to create more space around your feelings.
ALLOW YOUR FEELINGS
There is no escaping the occurrence of anxiety producing circumstances in our lives. Allowing and acknowledging the range of your emotions – including anxiety, anger and sadness can actually reduce the disorienting impacts of your difficult emotions.
TREAT YOURSELF AS A FRIEND
Your thoughts take place as a kind of inner-conversation. The quality of your inner conversation has a huge impact on your resilience and quality of life. Supportive self-talk is not easy an easy skill to learn, but it is a capacity that we can continue to get better at across our lifetime.
OBSERVE, NAME & NURTURE
If we can learn to observe our thoughts, we will create more inner-space for our feelings. This can help us feel more in control when anxiety strikes. If we can describe our feelings this also and also the content of what we are thinking, this can help us feel calmer and more emotionally safe. If we can do all this with an attitude of compassion, then we are truly on our way to experiencing genuine wellbeing.
